What ties them together: a card deck is a deceptively specific product to package. Too tall a box and the deck slides around inside, shuffling itself during transit and arriving with a worn top edge. Too short and the lid does not close cleanly or the cards bow against the inner walls. Card count and stock weight together set the deck thickness, and the box has to be built around those numbers rather than picked from a generic playing-card mould.

Tuck boxes are the classic playing card format. A single-piece carton that folds into a slim rectangular box with a tuck flap top and bottom, sized around the deck thickness. Cheap to produce at low volume, fast to assemble by hand, and easy to print full bleed across all four panels plus the tuck flaps. Two-piece lid-and-base boxes have a separate lid that lifts off a base tray. Common for flash card sets where the educator needs to access the cards quickly during a lesson without fighting a tuck flap. Also the right pick for thicker tarot or oracle decks where the card stack is heavy enough that a tuck flap would not hold the lid closed long-term.

Sliding drawer boxes are the step up for tarot, oracle and gift-style card decks. A printed outer sleeve and a separate inner tray that pulls out drawer-style. The slow reveal of the cards as the tray slides out becomes the unboxing moment tarot creators tend to chase for premium retail and gifting lines. Cardboard construction, flat-shippable, and priced for small runs.

Sleeves are the lightest option. A printed cardboard wrap that slides over an existing inner tray or a basic shrink-wrapped deck. The branding sits on the outer sleeve while the inner format protects the cards. Useful for budget releases, limited drops where the sleeve gets swapped between editions while the inner tray stays the same, and collaboration decks where two brands share artwork on the sleeve.

All four formats here are cardboard. Standard print-receptive board for the box exterior, with white card or kraft as the substrate options depending on the look the brand is after. Sizing follows the deck. We need three numbers at brief stage: card count, card dimensions (length and width of a single card), and card stock weight (typically 300gsm to 350gsm for playing cards, sometimes heavier for tarot). From those three the deck thickness is calculated and the dieline is built around the resulting stack with a small clearance allowance so the deck slides in cleanly without slack. Common card dimensions we work with include poker-size (63mm x 88mm) and bridge-size (57mm x 88mm) for playing cards, with tarot decks typically larger and flash card briefs varying widely by publisher.

Window cut-outs on the box face are a popular option for retail-displayed playing cards. Clear PET film backs the cut-out so the deck face is visible at the magic supplier or board game retailer without opening the box. Thumb notches die-cut into the lid let the user pinch the top card out cleanly with one hand, useful for educators running through a flash card stack mid-lesson or magicians handling a deck during a performance set. Minimum order is flexible, with 100 units the recommended starting point per deck SKU. For an indie publisher launching a three-deck range, that means 100 of each rather than 100 in total, which keeps each deck artwork's print spec locked in. Subscription card brands and one-off short-print runs sometimes start lower; flag the quantity at brief stage and we will work out what is feasible.

Physical samples are available before bulk production. A printed sample shows the artwork on the actual cardboard, the thumb-notch placement in your hand, and how the lid closes against the base. Sample fees scale with the finish list; digital proofs are included free. Reorders use the same approved artwork and print spec from your first run, so the dieline, finish list and substrate stay locked in.
