    Features

Sized for the Deck, Printed for the Brand

    01

Tuck, Two-Piece, Drawer and Sleeve Options

Four cardboard deck box formats on a single page. Tuck boxes for the classic playing-card format. Two-piece lid-and-base for flash card stacks and educational brands that want a sturdy lift-off lid. Sliding drawer for tarot and gift decks. Sleeves over an existing tray for budget-conscious or limited-edition runs.

    02

Sized to Your Card Count and Card Size

Every deck box is dieline-cut to the exact deck thickness you supply, calculated from card count and stock weight. A 52-card playing deck on 310gsm sits at a different thickness than a 78-card tarot deck on 350gsm, and the box is built around the actual deck rather than a generic playing-card mould.

    03

    Full-Colour Print Across Every Panel

Full-colour offset printing across the lid, base, side panels, tuck flaps and inside surfaces. Suitable for hand-illustrated tarot artwork, photographic deck themes, brand pattern prints for indie card games, and the kind of fine line detail that makes a magician's deck stand out on the shelf at a magic supplier.

    04

Foiling, Spot UV and Tactile Embosses

Detail finishes that lift the deck box at retail. Foil stamping in gold, silver, rose gold or copper for tarot wordmarks and premium playing card lines. Spot UV for selective gloss on a hand-drawn pattern. Embossing on a deck name or arcana symbol for a tactile lift the buyer feels before opening.

    05

    Cardboard, Kraft and Recycled Stock

Three substrate families covering most card deck briefs. White card for full-coverage colour photography and saturated brand prints. Kraft for natural-look brands and small craft publishers. Recycled cardboard for eco-positioned tarot and educational publishers. We adjust ink coverage and file prep so the print reads consistently across substrate choices.

    06

    Window Cut-Outs and Thumb Notches

Optional window on the lid for retail-displayed playing cards so the deck face is visible without opening the box. Thumb notches die-cut into the lid for easy single-handed card removal, a quality-of-life detail that matters more than buyers expect once the deck is in regular shuffle.

    07

    Multi-Deck and Boxset Configurations

Two-pack, three-pack and full boxset cartons for indie card games selling expansion decks together, tarot creators bundling card deck with guide booklet, or educational publishers shipping a vocabulary set across multiple levels. A divider insert keeps decks separated in transit. The outer box prints to the same brand spec as single-deck boxes.

    08

From 100 Units Per Deck SKU

Minimum order is flexible. We recommend 100 units per deck SKU as a starting point, so a Kickstarter playing card publisher launching three decks starts at 300 units total split across three SKUs rather than 100 mixed. Smaller short-print runs and pilot batches sometimes start lower; flag the quantity at brief stage.

    09

Free Shipping with 8 to 10 Day Production

Production runs 8 to 10 business days from proof approval, plus 3 to 5 days transit. Free shipping covers metro and regional addresses Australia-wide. For decks tied to a Kickstarter fulfilment date, school term start or event launch, submit the brief at least four weeks ahead. Rush production is available for tight deadlines, priced separately on the quote.

    01 / 04

Custom Card Deck Boxes for Indie Publishers, Educators and Magicians

Card deck box buyers come in three broad shapes. Indie playing card publishers funding a deck through Kickstarter or running their own short-print release. Educational brands and language-learning publishers ordering flash card runs in batches. Magicians, card game designers and the occasional tarot or oracle deck creator filling out the edge cases. The formats and substrates overlap; the briefs vary by what is going inside the box.

What ties them together: a card deck is a deceptively specific product to package. Too tall a box and the deck slides around inside, shuffling itself during transit and arriving with a worn top edge. Too short and the lid does not close cleanly or the cards bow against the inner walls. Card count and stock weight together set the deck thickness, and the box has to be built around those numbers rather than picked from a generic playing-card mould.

This page covers the full cardboard format range. If your brief sits closer to a small promo or sample deck rather than a full retail run, our printed pillow boxes page covers a more compact format for short-run giveaway decks or sample packs.

    02 / 04

Tuck, Two-Piece, Drawer and Sleeve: Picking the Right Format

The four formats this page covers each suit a different deck buyer.

Tuck boxes are the classic playing card format. A single-piece carton that folds into a slim rectangular box with a tuck flap top and bottom, sized around the deck thickness. Cheap to produce at low volume, fast to assemble by hand, and easy to print full bleed across all four panels plus the tuck flaps. This is the default for most indie playing card decks and most retail-shelf magician decks. For the same construction in a non-deck context, see our tuck-end folding cartons page.

Two-piece lid-and-base boxes have a separate lid that lifts off a base tray. Common for flash card sets where the educator needs to access the cards quickly during a lesson without fighting a tuck flap. Also the right pick for thicker tarot or oracle decks where the card stack is heavy enough that a tuck flap would not hold the lid closed long-term.

Sliding drawer boxes are the step up for tarot, oracle and gift-style card decks. A printed outer sleeve and a separate inner tray that pulls out drawer-style. The slow reveal of the cards as the tray slides out becomes the unboxing moment tarot creators tend to chase for premium retail and gifting lines. Cardboard construction, flat-shippable, and priced for small runs.

Sleeves are the lightest option. A printed cardboard wrap that slides over an existing inner tray or a basic shrink-wrapped deck. The branding sits on the outer sleeve while the inner format protects the cards. Useful for budget releases, limited drops where the sleeve gets swapped between editions while the inner tray stays the same, and collaboration decks where two brands share artwork on the sleeve.

Most publishers running multiple decks eventually run more than one format. The everyday playing card line in tuck boxes, a premium tarot line in sliding drawers, a budget educational line in two-piece boxes with a basic sleeve over the top.

    03 / 04

Cardboard, Card-Size Sizing and Thumb-Notch Details

All four formats here are cardboard. Standard print-receptive board for the box exterior, with white card or kraft as the substrate options depending on the look the brand is after. Both substrates take the full finish range (foil stamping, spot UV, embossing) so a cardboard card deck box can read as considered and premium on the magic supplier shelf, the board game retailer display or the indie publisher Kickstarter fulfilment kit.

Sizing follows the deck. We need three numbers at brief stage: card count, card dimensions (length and width of a single card), and card stock weight (typically 300gsm to 350gsm for playing cards, sometimes heavier for tarot). From those three the deck thickness is calculated and the dieline is built around the resulting stack with a small clearance allowance so the deck slides in cleanly without slack. Common card dimensions we work with include poker-size (63mm x 88mm) and bridge-size (57mm x 88mm) for playing cards, with tarot decks typically larger and flash card briefs varying widely by publisher.

Window cut-outs on the box face are a popular option for retail-displayed playing cards. Clear PET film backs the cut-out so the deck face is visible at the magic supplier or board game retailer without opening the box. Thumb notches die-cut into the lid let the user pinch the top card out cleanly with one hand, useful for educators running through a flash card stack mid-lesson or magicians handling a deck during a performance set. Our printed sliding drawer boxes page covers the same drawer construction in a non-deck context.

How to Order Card Deck Boxes in Australia: Quote to Doorstep

Send the brief through the quote request form: card count, card dimensions (length and width), card stock weight, preferred format (tuck, two-piece, drawer or sleeve, or all if you are running multiple lines), substrate preference, finish list, window or thumb-notch preferences, quantity per format and any artwork files or sketches. We come back within a business day with pricing, format suggestions where useful, and a production timeline.

Once you approve the quote, we send a digital proof showing the layout, dieline, finish callouts and any window or notch placement. Approve the proof and production runs 8 to 10 business days, plus 3 to 5 days transit anywhere in Australia at no charge. For card decks tied to a Kickstarter fulfilment window, a school term start, a magic convention or a tarot release date, submit the brief at least four weeks ahead so the standard timeline holds with breathing room. Rush production is available for tight deadlines, priced separately on the quote.

Minimum order is flexible, with 100 units the recommended starting point per deck SKU. For an indie publisher launching a three-deck range, that means 100 of each rather than 100 in total, which keeps each deck artwork's print spec locked in. Subscription card brands and one-off short-print runs sometimes start lower; flag the quantity at brief stage and we will work out what is feasible.

Physical samples are available before bulk production. A printed sample shows the artwork on the actual cardboard, the thumb-notch placement in your hand, and how the lid closes against the base. Sample fees scale with the finish list; digital proofs are included free. Reorders use the same approved artwork and print spec from your first run, so the dieline, finish list and substrate stay locked in. Resupply your approved files at quote stage; reorder production runs the same 8 to 10 business day cycle as the first batch, with the design and pre-production phase skipped. For brands considering a sleeve-only format on adjacent products like guide booklets or accessory wraps, our printed cardboard sleeves page covers cardboard sleeves outside the card deck context.

    FAQ

    Have a question?

Browse the answers below, or get in touch and we will be happy to help.

What formats do you offer for custom card deck boxes?

Four cardboard formats are covered: tuck boxes (single-piece tuck flap), two-piece lid-and-base, sliding drawer (tray-and-sleeve), and printed sleeves over an existing inner tray. All four are cardboard or kraft, printed in full colour with foil, spot UV and embossing options, and sized around the deck thickness you supply at brief stage.

How do you size a custom card deck box?

We size the box from three numbers you supply: card count, card dimensions (length and width per card), and card stock weight in gsm. From those, the deck thickness is calculated and the dieline is built around the resulting stack with a small clearance for the deck to slide in cleanly. There is no stock size range; every deck box is custom.

Do you print the playing cards too, or just the boxes?

This page covers the deck boxes only. We do not print the playing cards themselves. Most publishers we work with already have a card printer for the deck and come to us for the box, which lets each side specialise in the job they are set up for. Send the printed deck dimensions when you brief us and the box is built to fit.

Can I add a thumb notch or window to my card deck box?

Yes, both are common additions. A thumb notch die-cut into the lid lets the user pinch the top card out cleanly with one hand, useful for educators and magicians. A window cut-out backed with clear PET film on the box face displays the deck design without opening the box, popular for retail-displayed playing cards. Placement and size are both custom.

What is the minimum order for custom card deck boxes?

Minimum order is flexible, with 100 units the recommended starting point per deck SKU. An indie publisher launching three decks would typically start at 300 units total, split as 100 per SKU, which keeps each deck artwork's print spec dialled in. Smaller short-print or pilot runs sometimes start lower; flag the quantity at brief stage.

How long does production take, and is rush turnaround available?

Production runs 8 to 10 business days from digital proof approval, plus 3 to 5 days transit. For card decks tied to a Kickstarter fulfilment window, school term start or magic convention, submit the brief at least four weeks ahead. Rush production is available for tight deadlines, priced separately on the quote; flag the date when you request a quote and we will confirm whether we can hold it.

Can I order multiple deck formats in one production run?

Yes. Publishers running multiple lines (everyday tuck boxes for the core deck, sliding drawers for the premium edition, sleeves for limited drops) often brief all formats together. Each format goes through its own dieline and proof, but production is scheduled together so the formats land at the same time. Brief all formats at once through the quote form.
